Support » Plugin: Printable PDF Newspaper » Problems with Tags in Pages

  • Hi,

first of all: thank you for this wonderful plugin!

We have a problem with generating a pdf-newspaper depending on tags on pages. For tagging a page, we use the plugin “Pages with Category and Tag (https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/pages-with-category-and-tag/)” and it runs quite well.

When I now want to generate a PDF out of some tagged pages, there are no entries under “choose tags”. When I look under “choose category” I will find all categories.

I tried to use other plugins instead of “Pages with Category and Tag” – but the same problem.
Is this a known problem, or is there any solution possible?

    Thank you a lot
    Oliver

Hi @finnsland – thanks for the question! Here’s what I found:

It looks like the plugin you referenced is activating the “post_tag” taxonomy for pages, meaning it is reusing for pages the same collection of tags already available for posts. That is a sensible thing to do. But, the Printable PDF Newspaper is looking for a taxonomy based on the name of the post type, in this case “page_tag”. It does this so that it can support taxonomies for any custom post type, not just posts and pages (e.g. a post type of “song” would look at the taxonomy “song_tag”), but I admit that it is somewhat arbitrary and not a fully standardized naming convention.

From what I can tell, most plugins and guides for enabling tags on pages suggest re-using the post taxonomy instead of creating a whole new taxonomy just for pages, so I think I could make a change to Printable PDF Newspaper to load the post tags when trying to generate a PDF based on pages. I may also add a filter here so that developers can customize this behavior further.

I’ll try to update this thread again when I’ve addressed this. In the meantime, if you’re comfortable working with PHP code, the related logic is in classes/class-admin-ajax.php at line 90.

    Thanks for using the plugin!
    Chris
