I just downgraded WordPress to version 5.7.3, and now, it works again.
With WordPress 5.8.1 it didn’t work. When opening a page to edit, I got the gallery, only. The Button to exit the gallery was gone.

Anyway, for using free version you do not need to make any payments, but it is not advisable to install the free version over the premium version.
But I don’t have the premium version plugin.

You have mentioned the gallery version you currently use, it is 2.5.3. If the version starts with 2 this means you have our premium version.
Free versions start by 1, like 1.5.3.
