  • You need to make sure you are uploading the WordPress files and folders into your web-root folder.

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the bgroup_borderland database.

    * Are you sure it exists?
    * Does the user bgroup_udnepal have permission to use the bgroup_borderland database?
    * On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_bgroup_borderland. Could that be the problem?

If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host.

Error message is self-explanatory. Either the name of the database in incorrect or the user you created doesn’t have the necessary permissions.

I am having same problem, same message (we were unable to connect…). I put all the wordpress files and folders in the “public_html” file. I tried putting them in the “home” directory at the top of the tree, but got a broken link message when I tried to locate the url.

    we were unable to connect

That’s not the same error message. Either you have the wrong username or password.

WordPress goes in the public_html directory.

I created the database, user name and password with the MySQL Wizard, and changed the lines in the wp-config.php file to match all three. this is the complete message I get when I try to locate the url.

    Can’t select database
We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the halfside_wordpress database.

    Are you sure it exists?
Does the user halfside_phil have permission to use the halfside_wordpress database?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_halfside_wordpress. Could that be the problem?
If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forum

This is going to sound redundant but are you absolutely positive the name of the database you’re trying to connect to is halfside_wordpress and that the user halfside_phil has the proper permissions.

I just went through and deleted the database, user name and password, and re-created it all using the same names for everything. Nothing to change in the wp-config.php file, since I used the same names and password, but it worked this time. Thanks!

philinshelton – your DB_HOST will be localhost. If your account at hostmonster is halfside, then your databases names and users will be prefixed by halfside_. Make sure you give all database privileges to the database user.

Here’s a tutorial that might help you:
