Support » Plugin: 404page - your smart custom 404 error page » Problem with Yoast xml site map

  • Hi,

On installing 404Page I got this message: “Yoast SEO sitemap detected. Your 404 page is automatically excluded from the XML sitemap created by Yoast.”

I assume this means search engines won’t find the 404 page I’ve created (see link above; work in progress) alongside this plugin, which defeats the purpose of using the plugin.

What do I need to do? (I’m not very WP “advanced”, I’m afraid! But have used WP for a long time and so might be able to follow simple, basic instructions!)

I’m using Generatepress theme. I’m busy doing a big clean-up of masses of old posts that are little-visited, and updating others. Google will presumably start screaming soon at the vast number of deleted pages.

    Many thanks.

  • I’m having this problem as well…have you had any luck solving it?

I think you may be misunderstanding something.

A page that does not exist – that is, causes a 404 error – should not appear in Google.

It is perfectly correct to inform Google that a page does not exist. This is exactly what the HTML code 404 is intended for. This informs Google that the page should be removed from the index. That is not a negative thing.

In principle, this has nothing to do with the sitemap.

Please watch my videos, they should actually explain everything exactly. If something is still unclear, please report here again.

    Regards,
    Peter
