problem with variations using custom attribute

I had some products set up with variations using custom attributes under 1.6.6, but after I upgraded to 2.x, those products showed a message “no products matched your selection…” on the single product page. I verified that the variation config was correct, but the select box only displayed “choose an option” with no actual options in the drop down.

My workaround was to define an real attribute with all the possible options as terms, and transition the variations from the custom attributes to those attributes, and it’s working now, but this seems like it might be a bug
