• Hi, I hope someone can help with this as i’ve spent hours searching for a solution but nothing seems to work.
I have used WordPress for a few sites i have built but never actually used the blogging facility until now. The problem i am having is when i use a category for my blog posts. When i click on a category in my blog sidebar it takes me to the category page as expected, however when i click on any of my navigation links (pages)i am returned a 404 error. I can see what is happening to cause this. When i am on a normal page my url is as such localhost/mysite/blog , when i go into a category (for arguments sake lets say ‘news’) and try one of the links the url that returns the 404 would be as such localhost/mysite/category/news/blog or localhost/mysite/category/news/home . My permalinks are set to %post_id% %postname% . i have tried different options using the category base feature but nothing seems to work. i feel like this is something straight forward but have been ripping my hair out on it.
If anyone needs any more info please let me know.

    Thanks in advance

    Ross

  • Did you mean /%post_id%/%postname%/ ?

Yes, sorry. How you have it above is exactly how i had it. Although i have tried various other ways of setting up my permalinks.

ok, I think i may have resolved this now but would appreciate if someone could let me know if there are any reasons why my solution may not work. I have basically just added a base tag into my header which seems to have resolved the problem. Is this be a safe method to adopt?

What you did is refresh the permalink structure. Some plugins, cache ones in particular, when being installed or upgraded can mess with permalinks. To fix this, simply go to that settings area and save. So, you can try now to save without the tag base.

Review each plugin’s documentation for how they work with permalinks, as this may arise again.

Thanks for your response. I didnt have any plugins activated at the time so don’t think it could have been that.

For the record and for anybody else who has a similar issue, i just added <base href="http://www.mydomain.com" /> into my header and that resolved the issue

    Thanks for your assistance
