I was working on a clients site (this is my first wp site I’m building from scratch) and I was just about finished and ready to push it live, but I then thought it would be a good idea to synchronize the server files with my local files via Dreamweaver’s FTP. No, a good idea would have been to back it up via Godaddy’s hosting account first.

Normally I can write over files with no problem just using “Get” and “Put”, but this was the first time I wanted to sync it all and now I’m looking at a white screen of death on the site.

I had made several changes to css and whatnot just using the WP interface, so I opted to synchronize the entire site with a direction of “get newer files from remote”. I was sure I selected “keep newer files”, so I hit preview and let it run for a few minutes thinking it was just in the process of synchronizing, but when I looked closer at what was happening the log showed signs of files being deleted, so I panicked and cancelled it. I went to the site that was under development at targmarksolutions.com/wordpress only to find the white screen of death. I’m not sure exactly what had happened; I am still able to see many of the files both locally and on the server, but can’t log in at targmarksolutions.com/wordpress/wp-admin anymore. Please help! I don’t know what I’ve done and would hate to have to start from scratch after nearly being ready to go live.

I tried looking up to see if anyone else had the same issue, but the closest one I found was this:

I’m not sure if doing anything with the functions.php file is going to cut it.

I was able to resolve my own problem, so I’ll post my reply in case someone else makes the same mistake(s) I did. It was actually pretty easy. I’m still not too sure what made Dreamweaver delete all my files, but all of my deleted files were sitting safely in my recycle bin, so I just sorted by deleted date and restored all of the deleted items from that day. Everything went back into place locally, so then I “Put” the entire wordpress folder back onto the server. Just like that, everything was back in place. Case closed.

Additionally, its a good idea to create backups through your hosting provider regularly.
