  • I’m having problems uploading files…and am getting the following message. I would appreciate any help :

Unable to create directory D:\home\\wwwroot/wp-content/uploads/2010/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Not sure I understand this message

Change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

Thanks esmi…I’m getting a message.. 550 SITE CHMOD 644 index.php command not understood

I’m new to this and have installed 2.9.1 and am having the same problem. I don’t think this is a CHMOD problem.

Even when media files are uploaded with a FTP program to the proper wp-content/uploads folder they are not be recognized by as part of the wp media library.

Try using filezilla ftp program to change file permissions or if you are using cpanel, use its file browser to change permissions.

    Hope it helps!

ok I changed the permissions on wp-content/upload to 777 and it now works. How dangerous is this?

Yes, it is dangerous to assign 777 permissions to a folder. But it depends on the server configuration. If PHP is running as an Apache user, you have to assign 777 permissions. If suPHP is enabled 755 is sufficient to upload files via browser.

Ok, I’m having this same problem and I NEED those pics. Not only did the upgrade LOSE all my pics stored but now it will not let me upload them. Being a photographer this is a huge problem for me.

I’m not HTML literate. I do not use any outside program to use WordPress, and I’m not going to pay for any outside program like godaddy just to change html permissions script because I don’t feel I should have too.

Why can’t this wordpress be easy to use?! ahhhhh
Please help…in english, not html speak.

I find it curious that when the media are uploaded with 777 permissions to wp-content/uploads from within wp via the web browser they are recognized in the wp library but when they are uploaded via an outside ftp they are not recognized. Why is this?
