• In the Permalinks section, I’m told to update .htaccess file. How do you do that? BTW, there is nothing in the .htaccess file. it’s empty. Zero k’s

    Running IE and XP

When I looked into this empty file, the only thing in there is
    DirectoryIndex index.php

  • Open notepad – hit space bar once – save as .htaccess.txt – upload to WP root – rename to .htaccess – chmod 666 – go to permalinks a click update – go back and chmod 644.
    or a safer way
Open notepad – copy .htaccess rules from bottom of permalinks page – save – upload to WP root – chmod 644

OK, thanks for your response. I did as you said, following your second suggestion. I copied the rules, put them in Notepad, saved it as .htaccess.txt, uploaded it to the root directory. I then deleted the old .htaccess file, then I changed the name of the new uploaded file to .htaccess. I then went to the Permalinks page and clicked on the Update Permalink. I then got a message to say I have to update my .htaccess file.
Isn’t that what I just did?

Now, when I click Previous Entries, I get the following error:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@canwetalk.ceconn.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Now what?

Then, when I’m in the server in cPanel X and click on the http://www.ceconn.com/canwetalk/.htaccess I get the following error message:

    Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /canwetalk/.htaccess on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Where did I screw up?
