Problem switching established site to multisite (3 posts)

    We have a custom theme, but want to run a multisite. I was following the directions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network when I couldn't complete Step 4. Although I backed up the Control Panel (Step 1), I did not save a backup copy of .htaccess before I tried to edit it (Step 4).

    Our .htaccess looked something like (with unknown code in place of the ellipses):

    # Use PHP5.4 Single php.ini as default
    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php54s .php
    DirectoryIndex index.html.var index.htm index.html index.shtml index.xhtml index.wml index.perl index.pl index.plx index.ppl index.cgi index.jsp index.js index.jp index.php4 index.php3 index.php index.phtml default.htm default.html home.htm index.php5 Default.html Default.htm home.html
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    ...
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress

    I replaced the "..." with

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    and then tried to "login with the link provided". But now all I see when I try to access the site is "Error establishing a database connection."

    I have tried reading http://codex.wordpress.org/htaccess and using the codes shown there, but I cannot get back into the WordPress dashboard.

    I chose to restore my public_html directory from this morning's backup, but I'm still unsure of how follow the directions of Step 4 of http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network. I'll try again.

  3. Replace the WHOLE .htaccess.
