Support » Fixing WordPress » Problem setting one post as opening page

  • In order to show just my latest post as the current opening page, I changed Appearance;Widgets;Recent Posts to just one Post instead of the usual ten. However, the web page still opens with all previous ten Posts.
    I would like the web site to open with just my current Post appearing together with the Comment Form at the bottom. Have looked at numerous suggestions but they all seem to require some kind of coding to implement. I was under the impression that the Recent Posts widget would automatically solve this problem. My mistake?
    Would appreciate help on this.

  • You don’t need a widget. Under settings/reading>>number of blog pages to show. Set to one.

    Wow duh! That was simple. Many thanks indeed.
    I notice however that the invitation to comment is lost unless I go to Recent Posts, click on the post and then the comment form appears. Anyway to show that comment form on the default page?

    Under settings>>discussion, make sure Allow people to post comments on new articles is checked.

    Yes that is I already have that checked.

    Is this for new or old posts?

    new posts

    Have you tried:
    -deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
    -switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    I will try this tomorrow. Sorry delayed response, I’m care giver to my wife.
    Thank for your suggestions

    Deactivated all plug-ins. Deleted browser cache.Opened fresh page of blog. No change!
    This is what I get as before deactivating all plug-ins;
    1/ Main url shows one post as before (which is what I want, the most current post)
    at the bottom of the post it indicates the “Category” and “1 Comment” and “Other Posts”
    By clicking on “1 Comment” one can read the comment and also “Reply” which brings up the Comment form.

    2/ If I select the above same posting from “Recent Posts” and scroll to bottom of post I see “One response to” “Name of Post” and then;
    “Responder Says” “Blah blah blah….
    “Leave A Reply” and one sees the full comment form.

    Therefore I would much rather see scenario 2/ i.e. full comment form on the opening URL post because not everyone in scenario 1/ will know they can click on “1 Comment” to actually make a comment for themselves!

    I am also still puzzled why I saw no changes after deactivating ALL plug-ins. I hope I have provided a complete description for your evaluation.

    Opening the comments box is a theme function so to do that you need to find a plugin that works or set up a child theme where you can add the necessary code. A child theme is a pretty easy thing to do.
