 * Hi I’ve just got started with WordPress so am having a few teething problems.
   I’ve got wordpress set up and now want to post an image on the site. I login
   then click write to write a post and upload an image. When I try to upload an
   image to go with the post I get this message:-
 * Unable to create directory /home/mockney1/public_html/theeunifiedtheory-com/news/
   wp-content/uploads/2006/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
 * Can anyone tell me what this means and how I resolve this. I’m going to be using
   wordpress for a blog that is pretty much image based so sorting this out is really
   important.
 * The site is [http://www.theeunifiedtheory.com](http://www.theeunifiedtheory.com)
   if you’d like to take a look.
 * Thanks

 * This means the server does not have permissions to write into the `wp-content/
   uploads` directory.
 * Have a look here:

 * Thanks for the reply. I took a look at the link then had to dowload Extension
   Manager and get the ‘Set Permissions’extension. I’ve tried setting the permission
   on index.php and style.css but still no joy. When I try to set permissions I’m
   getting this message:-
 * Setting access properties are only supported on FTP sites.
 * I’m using dreamweaver to upload files and try to set the permisions which I imagine
   should be fine.
 * I installed wordpress through my host using fantastico in a directory called
   news. Could this be causing the problem.
 * I’m pretty crap with coding etc but I’m pretty sure I’m doing things right.
 * Any ideas?

 * Nope.
    1. I don’t have DW, but if it doesn’t let you change the permissions –
   forget it. Use a real FTP client. 2. The error message and alrescha’s post clearly
   stated: the **wp-content** (=parent directory) has to be writable. Not the index,
   not the stylesheet. 3. If there is fantastico, usually there is cPanel, too.
   From there you can also change the permissions on directories (and files). cPanel
   > File Manager: click on a folder name and watch the upper right corner.

 * Thanks Moshu I’ve accessed my cpanel and found the file manager. I then clicked
   on wp-content. Next I went to change permissions in the top right and all the
   boxes are ticked (numeric value being 777)
 * Is this what it should be?

 * Yes. Did you check if you can upload an image now?

 * Yes. Still doing something wrong though. I’m clicking on write a post. Giving
   the post a title. Writing a bit of stuff. Then clicking choose file. Choosing
   the jpg from the desktop. Then cliking upload. The image then appears in a window
   called browse as a small thumbnail. Then I’m clicking publish.
 * I then check the post on the site and the text is there but no image.
 * I’m sure this is basic stuff but I’m stumped by it.
 * Big thanks for your help by the way.

 * Yes, you did NOT put the image in the post.
    See [http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Image_and_File_Attachments](http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Image_and_File_Attachments)
   Section 3.

 * Thanks for the link I had noticed the pop up menu that appears when you click
   the image but didn’t know what to do with it. Gave it another try and still it’s
   not working.
 * I want the image to appear under the test I post on the page
    [http://theeunifiedtheory.com/news/](http://theeunifiedtheory.com/news/)
   but for some reason it’s not having it.
 * Could it be an issue with the image? It’s a jpg saved in rgb
    Is there a size
   limit? The image I’m trying to post is 40kb
 * Reaaly appreciate your help on this.

 * I’ve the same problem. I set wp-content directory with 0777. Corresponding cpanel
   line is like this :
    Set permissions on wp-content -> 0777
 * But when it comes to upload from wordpres, it still says this:
    It doesn’t look
   like you can use the file upload feature at this time because the directory you
   have specified
 * Thanks for help.

 * What popup menu? I don’t have any popup menu 🙁
    I click on the image and on
   the “back” of the image I see Menu options that toggle if clicked. So, I select
   Using Original; Not Linked; and finally click Send to editor. Done. Save/publish
   the post.

 * Hey presto! Many Many thanks for all your help. I’m sooooo pleased I can now
   do this.
    Just in the nick of time as well. It’s 11.40pm here in London and my
   son will be up at 6.00am. At least I can now dream of a site filled with cool
   images.
 * Thanks once again. The site wouldn’t be possible without your help.

 * OK, i’m gonna re-open this thread a little…
 * i’ve logged into my cPanel/File Manager and changed the “uploads” permission
   to 777.
 * And from the WP control panel, (Options/Misc) i changed the “Store uploads in
   this folder:” to “wp-content/uploads” and it still won’t let me upload pix through
   the WP control panel?
 * when i try to upload, the “upload” area of the “Write Post” page disappears and
   the text “The uploaded file could not be moved to .” appears instead?
 * <UPDATE>
    i think i figured it out… i had pre-existing subdirectories (2006 and
   then 07 from previous attempts to create) that had 755 permissions. so i changed
   those, and now it freakin’ WORKS!!!
 * my last question is this: i think i changed my permissions for the parent “wp-
   content” folder during all this craziness, and it’s currently set to 755… is
   this correct/safe?
