    Hi !

I think I have a problem converting png to jpeg, or simply don’t understand how the functionality works.

As I understood it, once you activate PNG to JPG conversion in the advanced settings, any time you will run the Bulk Optimize tool, png files will be automatically converted to jpeg.

But when I do, files are not converted, and are still .png files. Is there anything else I should install (does this require pngout for example? or a cloud subscription?)

I am quite sure my 700kb+ png files will be much smaller if converted to jpg, so I doubt it has anything to do with the plugin “skipping files because they would not be smaller” functionality.

You can see this on any of the images of my website like those on Chillout Travel

My hosting plan is a shared hosting on one of the major hosts listed in your plugin.

Thanks in advance for your help and sorry if this is quite a standard question, but after looking at the videos I couldn’t find the answer.

(Absolutely amazing plugin by the way!)

I tried one of the images (it was only about 98kb), and PNG to JPG worked successfully. One other consideration is that if there is transparency in the images, and you do not have a background color set, EWWW will refuse to convert a PNG to JPG.

    Hi, thanks for your answer.

I tried doing it on a single image in the media library, it didn’t work either (same file name and “.png” extension, also notable is a mention “no savings” in debug mode). I doubt it is a picture with transparency as it is a simple shot from a camera. I saved it on my computer and saved to jpg in Photoshop, and the file was indeed smaller, indicating there is work to do on it.

I sent you using the “contact us” form on your website the debug log from EWWW settings, as well as the one before (last optimization) and after I press “PNG to JPG” in the media library for a single file.

    Thanks for your help !

I also purchased an API key for the cloud settings, and when I save the settings, it jumps back to the basic settungs and doesnt save the API key at all. Problem with my plugin install ?

    It is up to date.

It always jumps back to basic settings, but if the key isn’t saving, then it’s usually a firewall/proxy issue with your webost.

I have a feeling it was conflicting with WP Super Cache, but I’m not sure it resolved my problem. I switched to the cloud version, at least it should work fine with that one. Will try and get back to you.

Firewall or proxy issue shouldn’t be the problem, since i’m on a standard shared hosting on one of your recommended and affiliate hosts, but can it be ?

The two versions of the plugin run the same code for the cloud verification, so that shouldn’t have any affect. I’ve never heard of a conflict with super cache, but doesn’t mean there isn’t one. I’d double-check with your webhost if you’re still having issues.

Seems like it was indeed the transparency that was causing issues, which is quite a surprising fact (Illustrator or Photoshop adding transparency elements? Maybe 1 or 2px line on corners that I haven’t seen when manually cropping…)

I simply added a white background on the plugin and forbid compression/conversion for files lower than 100k to make sure it doesn’t touch my logos etc. Seemed to work fine.

PS: I noticed Google PageScore still says I should compress my images, should I force re-optimize a couple of times to achieve better compression, or is it a known fact from you that Google folks don’t consider the images optimized by EWWW as “compressed” enough?

    Thanks for your help nonetheless

I think I see your problem there, well actually two of them.
When it says “Compressing and resizing…”, it means you have images that are not scaled properly for the page. Either scale them manually, or start taking advantage of the resizes that WP (and potentially your theme) are already generating for you.

The ones that just say ‘losslessly compressing…’ are likely due to the fact that you created the 100kb exclusion, so those images are untouched by EWWW.

So, first get all your images scaled properly. If you have a lot of posts/pages, this could take some time, but it is worth doing properly.

Then, turn off PNG to JPG, remove the 100kb exlusion, and then re-optimize everything (should not need the Force option, since those sub-100kb images were never optimized in the first place).
