I received the following message when trying to install WordPress:

Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to Please contact your server administrator.)

The problem appears to be in the update.php file as this is mentioned 3 times in the error message dialog.

    home/mysite/public_html/wp-includes/update.php on line 120, line 267 and line 407

I examined the file update.php and lines 120 and 267 are just blank empty lines. Line 407 does not even exist because the file is just 267 lines long.

I am new to using WordPress and trying to get it to install for the first time. Can someone please help me?

  • Where are you trying to install? Local or remote (hosted)?

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to install it to a remote host.

    Someone suggested re-installing WordPres.

I did this and then when I ran the install script I got the message “WordPress is already installed. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.”

Then I cleared all the old database tables. When I reinstalled then I got another message saying that the tables were needing to be repaired. I did this and it keeps saying the same thing over again.

How do I attach a screenshot to show on the forum?

I figured out the problem. I had to not only empty the old tables but delete them completely before re-installing WordPress.
