problem after moving directory
-
Hi
I’ve moved my wp directory from wordpress to author, but after I’ve completed a search and hit the home link, the browser tries to go to the old directory and not the new one, resulting in a 404 error.
Any thoughts as to why?
thanks

Have you changed the setting in the wp-config file (if it is there)? if not have you changed the path of the install in the database?
No, I’m a NewB, tell me everything please
I originally installed into http://www.myurl.com/wordpress,
then changed it using the dashboard to
http://www.myurl.com/authorWhat else do I need to do?
Wow, this is unbelievably complicated. All I want to do is move WP from one directory to another. Is there no simple way to do that?
I have gone to settings > general > and input the new WP address and new site address…
And?

If you using cpanel is matter of seconds to move wordpress.
And… I’ve made the two changes as outlined in the instructions, yet when I start at the http://www.myurl.com/author site, WP looks for (and can’t find because I deleted it) the old http://www.myurl.com/wordpress folder.
What is cpanel?
Cpanel is a panel just like desktop on a host server where you manage your files and folders for website.
Where exactly you have your wordpress files and folders in author or wordpress?
what do you have as wordpress url and site url? Here’s what’s so strange:
My old directory is http://www.myurl.com/wordpress so wordpress has its own place off the root.
My new directory is http://www.myurl.com/author
Everything works fine EXCEPT for images. I’ve used Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin and it seemed to work for the new directory. I thought, sweet, and deleted my old /wordpress folder. THEN all the images for the /author site went away.
I restored the old /wordpress folder, and the images came back, even though i was now using the new folder (author)
So I renamed the old folder /wordpress_old and guess what? The images went away again (thought I could read their descriptions on the page) I changed the name of the old directory back to /wordpress and the images once again returned.
So…anyone have an idea what’s going on here?
thanks

Tom? It’s the references in your post that refer back to the old location at /wordpress and not /author. You’ll need to go in and change them all.
That can be accomplished with the search and replace plugin BUT you really need to backup the whole works, database and files.
The whole thing can be found at your other thread including the solution.

There is a solution using search and replace, but it really does require that you make a full backup of your blog’s database and files.
http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_BackupThis is just in case but if something goes catastrophically bad then this will save you hours of grief.
Once that’s done, install the Search and Replace plugin.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-and-replace/
Use that to replace all occurrences of http://thomaskaufman.com/wordpress with http://thomaskaufman.com/author. Please note to leave off the trailing /.
That should take care of all the old references in the database and change them to the new URL.
And if something goes wrong, you can restore your database and get it back to the way it was.
Good luck.
You’re right, some of the images stubbornly keep the old /wordpress directory as part of their url, while others don’t. What I’ve tried Velvet Blues, Replace URLs but it didn’t do everything it should have.
What kind of search and replace plugin would work? Any recommendations?
thanks
Well, just as a suggestion, this one fit the bill when I played around with it. π
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-and-replace/
It did exactly what it said it would but that sort of thing can be tricky. I know i sound like a broken record, but backing up is always a good idea.
You can use this code and see if it replaces all urls.
Make a back up database and add this in sql tab change old-domain.com and new-domain.com to your urls.UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, 'http://www.old-domain.com','http://www.new-domain.com');
You will need to do the same search and replace with “post_content” for any embedded links.
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your answers. I did find and activate the search and replace plug-in, but got this message when I attempted to use it:
Β» Attempting to perform search and replace …
Β» Search http://thomaskaufman.com/wordpress … and replace with http://thomaskaufman.com/author
Looking & Replace @ all …
Sorry, http://thomaskaufman.com/wordpress is not found in this Database(tho1127803404051)!
What’ weird is that certain images refer back to the old address, so the plug-in should’ve changed those…
Govpatel sent me some code, but I do not know where the code is supposed to go?
thanks
