# Problem after DNS change

 * I think I may have done something wrong. I’ve been working on a site where the
   domain name isn’t pointed there yet. In order to be able to work on the site,
   I’ve had to edit my hosts file so that when I pointed my browser to the domain
   name, it redirected to the preview site ([http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/wp-admin/](http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/wp-admin/).
   This is because the preview link did not work for making any actual pages, posts
   or anything else on the site.)
 * Finished working on the site, and prior to changing the DNS settings, went into
   the Dashboard to be sure the Site Address and WordPress Address were mydomain.
   com. They were. But evidently my permalinks were set to [http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/post-name](http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/post-name)
   instead of [http://www.mydomain.org/post-name](http://www.mydomain.org/post-name).
 * I went to the domain registrar and changed the DNS Settings. Then I re-edited
   my hosts file so pointing the browser to mydomain.org no longer points to the
   preview site.
 * Now, I can go to the preview link, and see the settings in there – [http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17](http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17),
   but it shows the Site Address and WordPress address as [http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/](http://204.140.21.17/plesk-site-preview/www.mydomain.org/204.140.21.17/)
   instead of [http://www.mydomain.org](http://www.mydomain.org). Of course, I can’t
   make any changes through the preview link.
 * The domain name change hasn’t propogated yet. Am I going to be unable to access
   the admin site once the domain name does propogate?

 * Try resaving your permalinks. You may also want to take a look at the [Duplicator](https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/)
   plugin. It can be very useful even in a situation like yours where you are just
   changing the URL.

 * My concern is that at the moment I am only able to access the dashboard through
   the preview link, but can’t make any changes on the site through that, which 
   is why I had to edit my hosts file so that pointing to the actual domain name
   would take me to the new site instead of the old one. It never used to be this
   complicated, but since my web host migrated to a new Linux server I can no longer
   use the preview link to make changes on the site. I’m afraid that when the DNS
   change propagates, I won’t be able to access the Dashboard through the actual
   domain url.

 * Hello,
    My hosting service provider says I need to get the DNS settings from 
   word press and send it through to them. How do I get this?
