I have started building a website using WPv4.1 running on localhost (WAMP). I’m a complete novice, so have been gently feeling my way, but now have a major problem – I can’t seem to access the WordPress site admin. If I type in http://localhost/wordpress, or http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin, all I get is the site itself, without the ability to manage or edit it; I think I must have upset something somewhere. Any help greatly appreciated as I have put in a lot of work and want to regain control.
I’m using the Customizr and child theme and a few WP plugins, and think that the WordPress community is absolutely fantastic – Thank you all!

  • Have you tried deactivating all of your plugins through the back end?

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Thanks for the prompt reply Matthew. As I said, I’m a complete novice at this so do not understand what you mean about deactivating the plugins through the back end.
Also, my installation is on localhost, so as far as I can understand, I wouldn’t be able to use FTP or SFTP (not that I would know how). Could I just navigate to the wp-content/themes using Windows Explorer and rename the theme directory?
Also, would I lose all the work I have put in so far?
    Any further help/hints/info greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

That means then that you have already been able to log into the WP Admin area. As you mention, you should be able to access the site login with:

    http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin or

    http://localhost/wordpress/wp-login.php

Could I just navigate to the wp-content/themes using Windows Explorer and rename the theme directory?

    Yes

would I lose all the work I have put in so far?

    No

I don’t know exactly what happened, but I emptied the browser cache and can now gain access to the site admin.
    Many thanks for your help.
