I respect that, being a software/plugin developer myself. Just make a good product, and people will use it. Don’t cover it with ads if you expect to get a 5 star review from me. Everybody hates ads.
Take plugins like Duplicator and Advanced Custom Fields (before it was bought by delicious brains) as an example. Or try the free version of a game like snakebird. These guys have the right mindset in my opinion. They deliver a good product with zero ads. People talk about it, and it practically sells itself because it works / is fun. admin-popups are never a good way to improve your popularity.
I can go on hours about this, and nobody is reading this anyway, so I’ll just stop here 🙂
Bottom line: please just get rid of the ads. Leave the WP admin interface alone.
