What does it actually mean to designate a page as “private”?

How is this different from “password protected”?

    Thanks.

    • Password protected pages have a single password that everyone uses to view the page.
    • Private pages require the user to login to WordPress with their own username and password before they are able to view the page.
    • Password protected pages will load the template and show a “Password” input for users to enter the password and proceed.
    • Private pages will show a 404 (page not found) error if the user is not logged into WordPress.

Thanks for the quick reply. So it sounds like what I want is the password protected page. How do I ensure that the page does not get indexed with search engines?
