Hi Andrea, I see a big privacy policy issue, complying widt the GDPR regulations, in the fact that the excact address is revealed when users adds their position.

I know that BP Distance Search is not causing this, Google is, but it is a huge problem regarding holding and revealing personal information, plus the fact that you show the exact address where other members are.

I don’t know if my setup is wrong, but members have to add there position, for the search option to work.

How do I get around this problem, would it be possible to show distance only, instead of actual address?

    Regards
    Carsten

  • Hi Andrea, I found the solution myself by choosing ‘Only Me’ in the Visibility option for the field.

Hi Andrea, again a concern about GDPR privacy using Distance Search and geolocation. A Taxi company just received a large fine for holding taxi trip information about customers whereabouts. what about the geolocation of BP users, how is it stored, and is it deleted, when a user delete it’s account, and is the location information available for the user for download on request?

    Hi Carsten,

Yes, the Google Place Autocomplete fields created by BP Distance Search are BuddyPress profile fields, so they are managed by BuddyPress (exported, deleted, and so on) just like any other BP profile field.

Hi Andrea, at least I thought I found the solution, but…
for some reason the check in is now visible to all users in the profile, even Visibility is set to ‘Only me’

Do you have any clues how this can happen?

    Regards
    Carsten

Hi again, have done some testing, and it turns out, at least on my site, that the visibility option is only working for fields added in the primary group. So if the distance search field is added in another group, the visibility option does not work.

    Carsten

Hi Andrea, please note, this happens for all fields, not placed in the primary group, not for the Google Place Autocomplete alone, and must be a WP bug.

    Have a nice weekend

    Hi Carsten,

The Visibility settings work for me, regardless of the Field Group.

Please make sure you select ‘Enforce field visibility’, otherwise the visibility option chosen by the administrator is overridden by the individual members previous settings.

Hi Andrea, thanks, you were right, ‘Enforce field visibility’ was not selected, now the field is hided.

    Thanks again

    Carsten
