Prev/Next tag – no single.php file in theme

Hey there. Searched the forum and could not find an answer …
I have a theme that does not use single.php. I would like to put the Next post / prev post links on the permalink page (single page). I have tried moding the index.php without success. What can I do to add these links only to the permalink pages?
