On a regular WP install, this is caused by not having version 3.4.1 or higher. I have no clue about InstantWP and what it does or does not include.

If you want to test the “real” WordPress, I recommend MAMP (Mac) or XAMMP (Windows).

If it helps any, I occasionally get similar messages when trying to install a plug in. I have issues with NextGen and a zoom plugin for Woo Commerce. Most plugins install cleanly, but there is the occasional hiccup. If take the same plug in and install it a live site, no problem. Why? No idea. Sometimes I just us another plugin, if possible and go on. If I really need that plugin I will do make the changes once the site goes live.

It’s frustrating, but for the moment the ease of use and portability of InstantWP outweighs the cons.
