I’m customizing this theme and instead of making a Child Theme, I had read that editing the information at the top of the Stylesheet, particularly the version number, will prevent changes from being lost if there’s a theme update. I’ve already done this and am working on edits now so I wanted to confirm if this is a good route.

  • Not recommended….still use a child theme. Your other option is perhaps to use a plugin called “Easy Updates Manager” which lets you set what gets updates and what doesn’t.

When I tried installing a Child Theme, I wasn’t able to make any edits. Even if this method isn’t recommended, will it still prevent changes with updates? I’ll look into the plugin, thanks!

Overriding the parent theme (in this case Twenty Seventeen) can be tricky because of how the theme was coded. I remember some challenges when I make child themes for the default themes.

Try the plugin and see how that works out for you; which is the only alternative to a child theme at this point.

If you’re making a custom theme and are not going down the Child Theme route then you can name your theme differently in the style.css file for the Theme Name: bit.

Thanks Andrew. That’s what I’m going to do!
