Does the site is behind Cloudflare? If so it could block the recheck. Please add you whitelist your site IP on the Cloudflare side.

The invalid request means anything is blocking the Defender to check the rules, it could be Cloudflare or any server firewall.
But since you are not using Cloudflare we would need to run a couple of tests first.
For the initial test can you please go to WordPress > Tools > Site Health and check if it is reporting any issue there?
In case no issue is being reported, go to the Defender page to re-check the status, click on the right button of mouse > Inspect to open the browser console, ( To find more about browser console ) https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Browser_Console
Click to re-check the status and let us know if you see any error, you can take a screenshot, upload it to Google Drive and share the link.
