Support » Fixing WordPress » Pretty Permalinks cause 404 Error, works fine on default ( wordpress 3.1.1)

  • Hey Guys,

This is my first post and I’m learning how to build wordpress themes. I’ve really picked a bad time to learn apparently because this version of WordPress has a lot of bugs!

I’m hosting wordpress on my computer locally for development purposes (to learn) and eventually put on my server online. Everything dealing with wordpress was loaded and was installed properly on my computer (windows XP & WAMP). I adjusting my permalinks from the default to a custom permalink to show the month/year/date & saved changes.

When I went back to my homepage and clicked the “Hello World!” post, to my surprise . . . I get a 404 Not Found message and no page. If I switch back to the default permalink it works fine!

I don’t know whats wrong, I’ve tried a few things from different forum posts but nothing describes in detail what to do for a beginner like me (please be detailed its hard reading between the lines with this stuff). Please help me solve this problem, I can’t launch anything with broken links etc.

    Thanks WordPress Family 🙂 !!!!

Are the custom permalinks generating any .htaccess content?

Have you disabled all plugins and switched to the twentyten theme?

Yes, the custom permalinks are generating .htaccess content (it creates the file in my root) I know this because I deleted the .htaccess file and it created the file again when I re-saved a custom permalink in the dashboard of wordpress.

The twentyten theme is active and all plugins are disabled, the wordpress on my local host is a fresh/new wordpress platform. I haven’t tried to work on building a custom theme yet.
