preserve existing .htaccess code

I will be installing wordpress on a domain with existing content that has .htaccess for redirects. Can I confirm that wordpress will preserve any .htaccess code outside the # BEGIN WordPress # END WordPress block? Is this also the case for themes and plugins?

This should be the case because WordPress uses the markers to know where to place it’s code. But as always keep a backup of the file, just in case something does go wrong.
