Preload fonts doesn’t work

In google pagespeed insights there is a suggestion that I preload two fonts, one is a woff2 and the other is woff. I use Autoptimize and WP Rocket as caching plugins.

I basically tried everything. Set the original path to the fonts in the preload tag, I created a new folder in the root with the fonts, I used cdn for preloading the fonts, I tried it w/ and w/o the crossorigin attribute (also in two forms with the prefix crossorigin=”crossorigin” and also simply “crossorigin” at the end of the preload tag) and nothing seems to help.

Sometimes, but only sometimes the problem seems to be resolved (according to pagespeed insights), so pagespeed sees that I preload those fonts but most of the times it’s still there.

In the source code of the page you can see the additional tags in the header section, so I can’t seem to understand what is going on here.

Can you please help me figure this out? Frankly, your caching plugin combos are best, I don’t want to use anything else.

Well, I had to clean my glasses and zoom in on the HTML source a lot, but it looks like you have some copy/paste issues resulting in the wrong quotes being used;

It might be a relief to know AO 2.6 (hopefully out around Christmas) will have a new setting in “Extra” to … preload stuff. if you want you can use it now, the beta zip-file is here for you to download 🙂

The problem concerns the first two “link” tags and not the one with the ggl font so the solution is not near yet.

I’m about to try out the beta plugin now, will report back soon.

Okay, you are my hero. Problem is solved with the beta software of yours.

One more thing. There is a thread in this forum where you also found a solution to the problem originates from gtmetrix “add expires headers”. In that thread you found aout that the .htaccess was still influenced by a ghost plugin. Somehow this looks different in my case and I have those error and can’t find a solution for that. Any idea? (if you’d like I open another ticket for this concern :))

well, have a look here for info on how to configure your webserver for this or untick the “serve as static files”-option to at least fix this for the autoptimize_*.css or -.js files.

Hi, I am using the extra feature to preload fonts, but it isn’t doing it. The pagespeed still shows its not preloading, the inspection header shows nothing preloaded and I have Combine and preload in head (fonts load late, but are not render-blocking), includes display:swap. Selected.

@kbdiverservices can you try adding the full URL iso e.g. just fonts/Poppins-Regular.woff2?

Where am I adding the full URL? in the sytlesheet? The header? Where? And what is the full url? https://www.easternwatersports.com/fonts/Poppins-Regular.woff or is it https://www.easternwatersports.com/wp-content/themes/ew/fonts/Poppins-Regular.woff

well, as Google Pagespeed Insights is suggesting to do so, use the URL’s they show maybe? and as to “where”; you wrote you were using “the extra feature to preload fonts”, no? 🙂
