On our blogs sites, legitimate comments are being posted by readers. However, within the past few weeks, the comments are being inexplicably wiped clean after a short period of time within posting–seems like within a few hours or so. The comments are not being deleted–that is, not being completely removed from the site–they are just automatically being wiped clean.

So, say John Doe, makes a comment. After a short while, the content of the comment gets cleared/erased, leaving a blank spot next to John Doe’s name in the comment section.

The only thing that I can see in the Comment History for each comment is “Akismet cleared this comment” when it was posted.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue and what can be done to fix this? I’m completely puzzled as to what may be causing this. And since comments are being cleared, I have no way of looking back to see what was said in order to see what may have triggered the spam filter (or whatever may be the issue).

Here is a post on one of our blogs which is being affected:

At the moment, there are 4 comments in this post alone which are now blank. And, again, this is happening on a number of our blogs in all posts with new comments which use the default WordPress comments feature (as opposed to IntenseDebate, which we use on a few of our blogs, as well).

Lastly, I did just update some plugins this morning (including Akismet) as part of troubleshooting.

  • Check that Akismet thing. The program automatically previews comments to check for spam & the programming sucks. Well it does catch spammish comments, but it also stalls up legitimate comments.

That’s what ‘comments cleared by’ means. The comments should not be gone, you just have to approve them or ‘spam’ them via your email folder.
