• After receiving a complaint from a customer of mine that some of their pages were blank and following up on it, I found out that most if not all of the content in posts is gone. The posts still show up but their content is empty, both on the front as well as on the back end. Upon further inspection it turns out that nearly all of the post_content fields in the database are empty. The ones that aren’t don’t seem to carry more than a single letter of content, namely the capital letter H. Is post content now stored elsewhere and I’m just out of touch with how things work these days?

I went ahead and updated the WP site to the latest version (they were on 4.4.10) and updated the plugins all to no avail. Disabling doesn’t bring back any of the content either.

All the regular pages are fine and their content is showing on both the front and back end.

Creating a new post makes the content show up on the back end and on the database but things still remain empty on the front end side of things.

Switching themes to twenty seventeen doesn’t fix the problem either.

If you look in the database for the posts with missing content, is there content there?

The posts are there, but the post_content fields are pretty much all empty.

If there’s no content in the database, you’re pretty much out of luck. If you look at one of those posts, are there earlier revisions you might restore?

It’s got revisions but they’re equally as empty. Is there any reason why this could possibly occur? Is there a way to track back logins to see if it was a user at fault or the system just magically screwing up by itself?

Not trying to put the blame on anyone but I’d like to get to the bottom of this.

Nope, not post facto. If you have backups, you’ll need to see what you can recover from them. Also, check the wayback machine at archive.org.
