My latest post, “Take Control of Your Website”, looks fine on the home page at ArtGoneGlobal.com. However, when I click on the title and the post appears on a full page, the post title is misaligned. It should be left-justified. Instead it appears on 2 lines and begins in the middle of the page. This has happened on a couple other posts as well.

I am using the WordPress Default theme.

Can someone please tell me why this is happening and how I can correct it?

  • Seems that the content is in a div class ‘narrowcolumn’ which has the property text-align center. See if that is what is causing it.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Ellie for the quick response. I’m not a programmer, but I did look at the HTML code on that page to see the ‘narrowcolumn’ you refered to. However, I have no idea what change would be necessary to the HTML and I am reluctant to make any changes in case I mess it up.

Is there some change I can make in the Post Editor to effect the change I want?

You must edit the CSS file, Allen. The CSS is what is giving the look of the page.

Is the CSS is used to dynamically format every post in the blog? The post title on most of my posts is fine, and off on a couple only, including the current one. If the answer to the question is “yes”, then changing the CSS should affect every post, including the ones that are fine.

I am not aware of anything that I have done that would change the CSS and the title positioning for my posts.

Sorry, I have not taken CSS 101!

    Hi Allen,

Yes, that is the answer. And all of the posts I look at all the way down to and including this one: “Interview with Valerie Ashton, The Art Studio, Whistle Radio” all look the same when opened on their own. Actually it is a more pleasing look, if you think about it, as having it left aligned the way it is which allows for the right menus on the opening page, would look off balance in a page that has no right content perhaps.

Can you show me a posting that doesn’t have the text centered?

    Ellie
You have some interesting content, I will be going to read some of it. :o)

    Hi Allen,

Reading your content, where you point out that it is not necessary to pay someone to create or manage the content and the look of your site, as you don’t think it’s important to have any technical knowledge, you will appreciate that you will be tied to the basic design templates that are provided. The CSS tweaks that your web designer could have made for you would make the site look exactly as you wanted. It doesn’t look bad now.

    Quoting from your site:
“In my view it is very important that artists are able to update their websites themselves. … It’s faster and cheaper to maintain your website yourself.”

In no post is the title centered. The title **begins** in the centre and then spills to the next line.

When I work my way backward in time I find the following posts titles:

Take Control of Your Website (starts in the middle and spills into 2 lines- not what I wanted)

I’d Like AdWord With You (starts in the middle and spills into 2 lines- not what I wanted)

Does Facebook Own Your Images? (Left-justified as planned)

The Fuzzy World of Search Engines (starts in the middle and spills into 2 lines- not what I wanted)

It’s New and Free (Left-justified as planned)

All the rest of the previous posts are left-justified as planned.

    Ellie,

    Thanks for reading my blog!

Few of my artist readers have skills to make CSS changes and I agree they may be limited to basic design templates. Some of those basic templates can produce a pretty snazzy art site.

My technical skills are limited too, but I was able to create this blog. This is the first issue I have encoutered in 10 months.

    Hi Allen,

I am not sure what you are seeing, but I see the titles all left aligned. None of the three I looked at ‘spill to the next line’ – they are all on one line.

The content is centered and text is justified (with the title left-aligned) where on the main page the content is left-aligned with very little left margin.

I guess I am not seeing what you are seeing, as perhaps it is different in different browsers. Certainly on FF and IE the titles are on one line only and are left-aligned within the centered content.

Sorry I can’t see what you are describing.

    Cheers,

    Ellie

    Ellie,

I got it! When I displayed the posts in FireFox everything was fine so the problem was with IE. I had set the IE View- text size to “Larger”. Switching it to “Medium” resolved the problem. So simple! Thanks for mentioning FF. It led to the solution.

Thanks for your patience in working through this.

    Allen

Well I am glad you found out the reason for your odd behaviour of certain posts.
This is an excellent example to show us that we can never really be sure of how our websites will appear on different people’s browsers and viewing preferences. A professional website builder and designer will test the site in the different browsers etc. and make sure it doesn’t ‘fall apart’ or look too bad.

Last night I tried your site increasing the text size to see if that was the problem and even doing that it did not show the behaviour you described. For that reason I never mentioned it.

    All the best,

    Ellie

    Are you using IE 8.0.6001.18702?

    8.0.7600.16385

You can never, unfortunately, know what your viewers will be using for browsers. Just check the look on several of them to be sure (on at least Mac and Windows OS, but more, if possible).

Not to mention viewing on mobile devices, of course.
