Support » Fixing WordPress » Post Status Switches To Private

  • On the site I take care of for my pastor, it seems that every once in a while, one of his posts will mysteriously change status from ‘published’ to ‘private’. Of course this results in the post effectively disappearing from the site.

He doesn’t do anything to change the status, and the post-status box is not in the drop-down position, so he’s not accidently changing his selection.

Has anyone else encountered this? If so, is there a known reason for this happening? And more importantly, is there a known fix to prevent this from happening?

I’ve tried searching here for anything similar, and I found one instance of something like this being reported, but no apparent answer. (

  • There doesn’t seem to be anything reported to Trac on something like this:

Version 2.0.5 ‘updated’ an index based on the post_status field in wp_posts. If you are not at 2.0.5 you might consider upgrading.

You might also consider using pnpMyAdmin (under the Operations tab) to check or optimize the wp_posts table .

I have the exact same problem as steelerdirtfreak, and it’s driving me mad! It is very, very frustrating when I write something important that needs to get out there today, and then I notice late at night that it’s been private all that time! I’m on WordPress 2.1.2, now, but I’ve had this problem for a long time. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it can be serious, like today.

If anyone know anything about how to fix this, please let me kno! I’ll be forever grateful!

Same problem. I’m using the latest version and suddenly I’ve got “Private” marked on my Introductory post.

Is there a way to move posts into other categories so the so-called “private” category can be deleted?

    Same problem here using 2.0.11-RC2.
