# Post spam?

 * Lately I’m getting spam showing up as posts in my blog! Anyone know what’s happening
   and how to fix it?

    You seriously need to update.
 * Here’s the short version:
    1. Backup the database [http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/](http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/)
 * 2. Download ALL your files from the blog. Every single one of them.
 * **These two steps are extremely important. Do NOT skip them.**
 * 3. Download this and unzip it:
    [http://static.wordpress.org/archive/wordpress-1.2-mingus.tar.gz](http://static.wordpress.org/archive/wordpress-1.2-mingus.tar.gz)
 * 4. On your website, DELETE these:
    /b2-include/ /wp-admin/ /wp-links/ and all
   the other wordpress files at site root, but NOT the b2config.php file
 * None of the above directories should have any of your web content in them.
    Do
   not be tempted to overwrite at all – I can promise you will get errors.
 * 5. Download b2config.php.
    Open it in Notepad Open the file ‘wp-config.php’ in
   the WP1.2 download Transfer the mySQL information over. save the wp-config.php
   Upload everything to your blog (that’s all the new 1.2 stuff) Delete the file
   b2config.php from the server
 * 6. Now go to [http://www.example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php](http://www.example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php)
   
   It should run okay.
 * 7. Now DELETE everything you just uploaded EXCEPT wp-config.php
 * 8. Download the latest 1.5.2
    [http://wordpress.org/latest.zip](http://wordpress.org/latest.zip)
 * 9. Unzip, and upload everything to your site again.
 * 10. Run upgrade again – [http://www.example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php](http://www.example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php)
 * That will get you to the latest.
    You automatically have better protection, but
   you would be very wise to then get hold of these two plugins: [http://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/](http://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/)
   [http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/](http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/)
 * If you are not comfortable doing this, I will do it for you but as it’s 00:41
   here now it will have to wait until tomorrow. Backing up your data first though
   is by far the most important step.

 * I forgot to add:
    Once you’ve done this, your layout will change to the new WP
   default. You can get your existing layout back, but it’ll take a small amount
   of work. We will help 🙂 Keep those backups.

 * I’m running plugins photopress, addictions, mymoomus and backup.
 * It’s happened since I posted, even. I can’t figure it out. I thought maybe it
   had something to do with the “upload by mail” option, so I’ve disabled that and
   we’ll see what happens….

 * Cetta:
 * 1. Change your administrator password as well as all other WordPress user passwords
   that you can think of.
 * 2. Make sure that no unwanted users are registered with a user level above 0.
 * 3. Upgrade to WordPress v1.5.2.
