yes, really, i did.
all i did was click on it. then, i went and looked at the site, and there it was, working perfectly.
Damon, where are you hosted? This may be a case of a host providing themes that don’t come with wp normally….

Dreamhost, just signed up this morning.

I just read through all the code and there was a missing </div>. I put it in, and the site looks ok now, but it still wont validate fully.

So, is one NOT supposed to edit through the WP dashboard, or is one supposed to? Should I be downloading my entire site by ftp here, editing in dreamweaver and then uploading?
yes, ideally, but you shouldnt be editing in dreamweaver either 😛 (atleast thats what the gurus say) I use a plain old text editor.
The biggest upside to editing locally, is that you have backups available for when you mess something up — you just reupload the unchanged file (which is what I was always suggesting)

so the dashboard is not really there to do posting/editing. its a “im on the road” type of scenario?
I guess i didnt understand that I was supposed to download all my files, play with them here, and then upload them.
how would you open style sheets and the like in a text editor?
I REALLY appreciate your help.
well the ftp client I use has a built in text editor that I work with.
.css files will open fine with either wordpad or notepad, as will .php files. You just need to use the “open with” option instead of “open” when right-clicking on them.

Awesome, thanks so much. Things are a little clearer now.
Thx
And maybe try the coffee cup freebie html editor….
Just to clarify the mis-understanding about where the theme came from in the first place, Dreamhost pre-installs a bajillion WP themes when you do the one-click install. But if something gets really messed up, it should be possible to scare up that theme with a quick google search and then reinstall it.
And a word of warning if you modify your theme… Back it up before doing a one-click WP update, or Dreamhost might (=will) overwrite it.
yes, thanks nickel, I was unaware of that until I read something related to that in another thread. It’s certainly worth noting as its assumed thats not an issue.
