• I’ve got three WordPress sites. Two were on 2.7 and worked fine. In the edit pages I had buttons for spellcheck, links etc. and clicking on the links in the time scheduling worked fine all the time.

    I’ve just upgraded those sites to 2.8.5 successfully, earlier this week, and installed a new site at 2.8.6. On every site I no longer have the edit buttons for spellcheck and adding links which causes issues I can tell you. Additionally when I publish a page it seems to take a few minutes updating the page which disables editing on the private/schedule etc. options until it has either finished or timed out.

    All except the link button I can live with. It just wastes time but when I type the links manually using <a titl… href… etc. Sometimes, not always it prepends my domain at the front which makes the link invalid. Editing doesn’t work I have to delete it and paste in a working link from another post and edit the text. Strange that.

    I’ve searched the forum and it seems this has been found before but from what I read there has been no solution found.

    Any ideas? now we have progressed a bit?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?

    resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Tried the first two but have not done anything on the third. I’ll try that later this evening. Thank you for the response.

    OK. tried the third and no joy. I even set up a site with WP on it’s on with no add ons, no themes just basic site and it did the same thing.

    I’m on IE7 if that makes a difference and I can’t change it either as it is on a Corporate system.

    Have you tried re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of 2.8.5 or 2.8.6 as appropriate?

    I have installed a completely new fresh copy of 2.8.6 on a site with no themes or addons and it is still an issue.

    Fine on 2.7 using my PC and when upgraded to 2.8.x it failed.I suspect an issue with IE7 but I just can’t change that due to corporate policy.

    IE7 normally works fine with WP & the default theme. Are you behind a corporate firewall?

    No. Just a normal NAT router at home.

    I’m going to try it on another system to see if it is IE7. If it is though it is very strange as it was fine on WP 2.7 but changed instantly on an upgrade to 2.8.

    And its not just me. I logged it at HQ and asked for the backup admin to takeover because I was getting lots of complaints about dead links. The other admin has the same problem although he is behind a firewall.

    Well looks like it is only on IE7. I’ve tried on severalother systems and its OK.

    Is this a recognised bug in WordPress? So someone will look at it.

    In the meantime I’m changing back to 2.7. We won’t get approval for a change to the SOE.

    It’s not a recognised bug as far as I’m aware. In fact this is the only time I’ve heard of this.

    Mmmmm. Wonder what else is going on then? If this isn’t a common IE7 problem but it is happening to others running IE, different versions, then there must be something else as well.

    I’m going to rebuild my system and see what happens.

    This was happening with me in 2.8.5 just a week ago. I was hoping the upgrade to 2.8.6 would help – but no. Cannot edit pages or create new pages. Doesn’t work in Firefox, or with all plugins deactivated, or default theme.

    i’m thinking bug. on edit or create it hangs in this block as noted below.

    /* <![CDATA[ */
     var quicktagsL10n = {
     quickLinks: "(Quick Links)",
     wordLookup: "Enter a word to look up:",
     dictionaryLookup: "Dictionary lookup",
     lookup: "lookup",
     closeAllOpenTags: "Close all open tags",
     closeTags: "close tags",
     enterURL: "Enter the URL",
     enterImageURL: "Enter the URL of the image",
     enterImageDescription: "Enter a description of the image"
    };
    //HANGS HERE: convertEntities is not defined
    try{convertEntities(quicktagsL10n);}catch(e){};
    /* ]]> */

    is there a reason a try/catch is doing nothing?

    //HANGS HERE: convertEntities is not defined
    try{convertEntities(quicktagsL10n);}catch(e){};

    same here with WP3.0.

    Happens only with firefox with non superadmin users.

    I am having the same issue. FF, superadmin in WP 3.0.1.
    Does anyone know what this code does?

    Thanks.
