Post Edit Screen Restricted by Yoast Metabox

Hey guys,

Following the recent update to 6.6 I’ve noticed that any meta boxes below the content in the Post Editor restrict the size of the editing window i.e. jam the last block hard against the bottom of the editing window, forcing me to add several blank paragraphs, in order to get some ‘breathing space’. Yoast is the plugin in question but the Custom Fields meta box has the same effect. If I deactivate the plugin or toggle off the Custom Field UI the issue goes away.

It’s a bare bones dev site with zero plugins activated; was using Ollie but now with TT4 and it’s the same.

Anyone else experiencing this or have any insights?

Hi @kracked888 👋

I have only been able to test using Custom Fields, enabled via the block editor preferences, but that looks to be working well for me. It’s anchored neatly at the bottom of the editor.

Could you share more details about what you’re experiencing with Custom Fields? A broader screenshot or even a quick demo video would be very helpful in understanding the issue.

Image 1. I’ve enlarged the image slightly to try and make it a bit clearer. You should be able to see how the last <p> block is jammed hard against the bottom of the editor window.

Image 2. I’ve collapsed the Yoast Meta Box and now the last <p> block is jammed against the bottom of my browser window. The content won’t scroll up to raise the last block to a comfortable working height in the editor. I have to add several empty <p> blocks instead…

Thanks James, appreciate the input but this isn’t specific to Yoast (Sorry Team Yoast if it feels like I’ve thrown you under the bus), the same issue exists if you toggle on Custom Fields, via the block editor preferences…

Thanks for the extra screenshots @kracked888.

I created two test sites, one using WP6.5.5 and the other using WP6.6. The behaviour with the custom fields UI enabled was the same in both versions for me when the Custom Fields UI is enabled. I can see what you mean though when there are no meta boxes displayed you can “scroll past” the bottom of the content a bit.

If you have the time, I’d suggest submitting a Gutenberg issue outlining what you’d like to see changed. As 6.6 is behaving the same as 6.5.5 I’m not sure much more can be done here.

Thanks Aaron, appreciate the follow-up. I have experienced this in the past and IIRC a subsequent update resolved the issue. I will submit a Gutenberg issue as suggested…

PS: What are using to record the screen / mp4? That functionality would be really helpful at times…

I’m using MacOS. The video was recorded using the in-built functionality it provides.

You can read more on that via Apple’s support docs if you’re also using MacOS.

If anyone else feels that the editing experience, due to this issue, is unsatisfactory, please comment on the pull request so it gets some traction…
