[resolved] Possible to use SSL in admin/login and non-SSL on front-end with mapped domain? (7 posts)

Hello. I've been digging through the forums and trying out multiple domain mapping plugins. I've been unsuccessful so far, so I'd like to ask if this is even possible.

On a multisite subsite using the original domain for the admin pages, is it possible to use SSL on the login page and admin area and non-SSL on the front-end with a mapped domain?

In all of my tests the site works, but the cookies just don't carry over so I'm not logged into the front-end (admin bar is hidden). The cookies carry over fine without SSL, but not with SSL.

    Details:
SSL: Wildcard SSL cert network wide
Admin Area: original domain + SSL (subdomain.domain.com)
Login Area: original domain + SSL (subdomain.domain.com)
    Front-End: mapped domain + non-SSL (other domain.com)

If this is possible, any tips on getting it to work?

    Thanks!

    Yes - http://codex.wordpress.org/Administration_Over_SSL

It sounds like you want to configure FORCE_SSL_ADMIN, we use that ourselves.

    Thanks for replying.

Yes, I've used that and I can login to the SSL admin area fine, but when I go to the front-end (mapped domain, non-SSL) the cookies do not carry over (i.e. the admin bar does not show).

  4. When you;re logged in, go to https://domain.com/ to view your site. I do that and it works fine.

Thanks Mika. Unfortunately that doesn't work for me, it auto-redirects to http. Likely because I'm using a wildcard subdomain for the login/admin pages and the mapped domains don't have individual SSL certs. Or maybe it has something to do with WP Engine.

  6. Yeah, that is going to be a pill. Ask WP Engine if they know of a workaround, but your Admin and your front end have different URLs so that'll always be weird.

Thanks Mika, I'll do that. I appreciate your time, marking this as resolved.
