Support » Plugin: W3 Total Cache » Possible to have cached 404 pages return 404 header?

  • Is there a way to store, check for, and return a 404 header for previously cached 404 pages? I just had an issue with a client where a file named ads.txt was cached, and then when Google went to fetch it they got a 200 Ok, but since the generated 404 page did not contain my client’s id and didn’t return a 404 all ads stopped showing on his site for 2 days. In this particular instance it’s easy enough to just create a manual file, but I am sure there are other scenarios where having a system check for a file that should either be valid or return a 404 would be the expected result.

Is this something that would be difficult to implement?
