Portfolio Website (14 posts)

A very simple portfolio site to show off some of my new media work. This is my professional "need a full time job" website, so it's intent is to be straight forward and less bloggy.

The theme is rooted in my wp508 theme but has been customized a great deal to support the colors I use for my resume and printed portfolio.

I scrolled through the pages and wanted to see some of the work you'd done. The tabs are empty besides web, and wasn't sure if you were still working on the site or if you hadn't planned on filling those tabs.
I liked the "Nice try though" comment on the empty tabs. Cute. But it would be nice to see a link next to the comment that takes the viewer back to a functioning page, so they don't have to click the "back" button on their browser or slide up to the beginning of the portfolio again. I know, I know... that's laziness talking. But sometimes decisions are made in seconds, and a viewer may not go further if the page seems to be a dead end.

  3. I probably should have put a disclaimer that I'm not done entering content yet... :X

I totally agree on all your points, and the idea is that there will be something on each tab at all times. The "Nice try though" was just me putting something there to know that the page was indeed working. I won't have time to attack this until after the holiday :(

  4. Bump... Added content!

simple site... i think you need to improve the menu's layout...

  6. How so? It really should just be two simple levels of links. I haven't tested this at all in IE6 so it is possible that it's broken there...

Nice and clean ^^. I really like the scrolling portfolio and the bouncing lamp! Is the portfolio done in Ajax? Was it easy to make?

  8. The portfolio was actually a mootools based gallery that I modified a little bit to fit WordPress. Underneath it all, each of those images is actually a blog post underneath the portfolio gallery. I simply just didn't link back to those individual pages. (I actually don't have the single.php coded yet, but shh haha!)

Why use mootools? Was it not possible with JQuery?
I am VERY new to WP and just investigating using it myself, ideally as a CMS.

As a designer, and former design instructor, I think you can be proud of this site. It's not easy to showcase your work in a simple, user-friendly way, and you've managed to do that. As someone who has also hired designers in the past, I would recommend adding a link so that potential employers can either see your work history, or download a pdf version of your resume. Most employers are going to want to know your work history, as well as your education level.

    Good Luck!

Hi John, nice design on your site, i really like the simple and formal layout. Just a couple of constructive critiscisms: Firstly i think the larger versions of the webdesign images should link to the actual websites that you have designed, so any prospective clients can have a look at your work in more depth. Also just about your contact page, it would probably be a good idea to set the background of the text boxes to a light grey as the white is very harsh against the black background and it could do with tidying up a little to fit in with the clean design of the rest of the site, perhaps just by seperating the text boxes from the titles with a break. I also agree with Manda about your resume.
Other than that its a really good looking site and very well presented.
    Well done
