Hey,
Type and categories are the same. If you’re just wanting a gallery I would suggest using the gallery feature, rather than portfolio.

The Ascend theme I am using has a Gallery page which currently uses portfolio template. Then there are portfolio pages that have images. So I know I can drop images into a blog post, set a post as Gallery type, I do however want the same images to show up in my gallery pages dynamically, so I’m not sure how the gallery page would work without portfolio.
It also appears that creating a new “category” also creates a new “type”. Merely selecting a “category” for a portfolio item without also checking the same for “type” does nothing in the end result, the “type” has to be selected, which makes categories redundant.
Are you seeing both type and categories for portfolio? They mean the same thing, but you shouldn’t be seeing both.
As for galleries, you can add a gallery to any page. If using the block editor you can use the gallery block. Or if using the classic editor you can click “Add Media” then create a gallery.

I have portfolio type and categories. Type was populated when I imported the demo content for the Ascend theme while Categories was empty. I created some portfolio categories. Testing a new portfolio item post I assigned a category but it doesn’t seem to do anything. I noticed that the breadcrumbs show that a portfolio post with a type checked off I will get Home>>Gallery>>[Portfolio Type]>>[Portfolio Post] but with no Type checked off and a category checked off it is merely Home>>Gallery>>[Portfolio Post]. So not sure what to do at this point. I suppose I can just use “Type,” “Categories” makes more sense to me.
As for Portfolio I only use it because that’s the only way I can dynamically get my latest image posts to show up on pages like Home with the Ascend theme. I have no idea how to create a whole separate gallery that I can add to my home page like in the Homepage Layout Manager with Portfolio Grid.
