I just started using the portfolio option of Custom Content. I now have several portfolio posts, that I can see when I go to the general portfolio URL, but it does not show up in the page list.
In order to include it in the menu, I used the link. http://faithdance.org/de/portfolio/ but for some reasons it keeps giving me an error, until I refresh the permalinks.
Also I am stuck when I want to use the portfolios as a starting page – in Portfolio Press that would result in a photo gallery grid.
Do I need to create a page with the name ‘portfolio’ to do this?

That Portfolio page is indeed not a regular static page. It’s an Archive page, much like your yearly archives for example, except it’s set to display an archive of your Portfolio projects.
The display of that page is entirely controlled by your theme.

In order to include it in the menu, I used the link. http://faithdance.org/de/portfolio/ but for some reasons it keeps giving me an error, until I refresh the permalinks.

That can indeed happen sometimes when enabling Custom Post Types on a WordPress site. We’ve added some code to prevent this in Jetpack, but apparently it doesn’t always work. I’ll run some tests to try to reproduce the problem. If you remember the exact steps you followed to reproduce the problem, it would be helpful!

Also I am stuck when I want to use the portfolios as a starting page – in Portfolio Press that would result in a photo gallery grid.

That will depend on your theme. Some themes, like Illustrar, include a “Portfolio” page template that allows you to give a special look to one of your pages and make it your Portfolio page.

In other themes, you could use the Portfolio shortcode to display Portfolio projects on the page of your choice, including your hoe page if you use a static front page:

    I hope this helps.
