Support » Fixing WordPress » popup ads not planted by the site admin??

  • hi. i suddenly started getting popup ads when i went to my friend’s wordpress blog tonight. she is at

    she is completely shocked that the ads are there, and her husband didn’t add them either. she uses the Dark Maple theme, but i didn’t see anything in the forums to suggest that it has anything to do with that. plus, she’s been operating a couple of months, and tonight was the first time for popups. i only get them if i click on the banner (which doesn’t take you back to the main page) or click on comments. when her popup comments window opens, the popup ads appear (even in Firefox).

    any idea what could be causing this, or how to fix? i would appreciate any help.

    i’m asking for her because she’s very new to wordpress, and i’m not so new.

  • Your friend is on what I call a crappy host.

    It’s either your domain provider (if your using masked redirection) or your host has some weird setup…

    The source of the page looks like this:
    <META NAME="description" CONTENT="">
    <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="">
    <FRAMESET border=0 rows="100%,*" frameborder="no" marginleft=0 margintop=0 marginright=0 marginbottom=0>
    <frame src="" scrolling=auto frameborder="no" border=0 noresize>
    <frame src="/pop-src-page.script" topmargin="0" marginwidth=0 scrolling=no marginheight=0 frameborder="no" border=0 noresize>

    The actuall page(from what I can see) is located at:

    The other code below that is triggering the popup’s

    Hope that helps 🙂 As to what to do about it…ask the domain provider(if your using the kinda redirection)?

    thanks, mattman. they are on their own server, so i don’t know how that could have happened. and now the strangest thing:
    when i go back to the site, first, i don’t see this part of what you printed above:
    <frame src="/pop-src-page.script" topmargin="0" marginwidth=0 scrolling=no marginheight=0 frameborder="no" border=0 noresize>

    and now, i am not getting the popups. it seems to have fixed itself, but i have no idea how.

    thanks for the help!

    I’m still getting a pop-up when I visit the site Sarah.

    Maybe it comes and goes?

    I get no popups, but both those links are fantastically slow. Reduce the number of posts on show ? 3 months worth is quite a few…..

    I can promise it is not that theme though – I have used it and the author is a Moderator here.

    My malware scanner just went off:
    is trying to be installed.

    Change theme.
    Delete (or download) the bad theme.
    Upload a new copy of dark maple and chmod the files to 644 – no higher. That might help.

    This is crap server hosting – as pointed out above.
    Plan a move.

    i’ll let her know about the server thing and on uploading a new copy of the theme. yeah, i actually told her in an email that i didn’t think it could possibly be the theme because the writer is a moderator here. i must be smart!

    thanks, guys. meanwhile, i’ll switch her to the default and let her know what i did.

    ok, i switched her to Kubrick, and the popups are still there. does that mean it’s on her server now (which is a computer in her house)? her husband’s wordpress blog, which is also on the same server, is not affected.

    sorry to post twice in a row, i should have tried switching her theme before commenting before.

    Sounds like your friend is using as her DNS host. They added popups to their web forwarding service, but so far only for cloaked (cloaked means the domain being forwarded stays in the URL address bar, rather than it showing the URL of the site it took you to) forwards as far as I know. As a quick fix I’d suggest removing the cloaking.

    Here’s an official statement from support I found at,15344934:

    “The popup ads are a recent addition to our free web forwarding service.
    ZoneEdit was recently purchased by Dotster, and it’s their policy to
    include popup ads on free accounts that use web forwarding.

    With the purchase of one zone credit, popup ads are disabled. One zone
    credit is $10.95, and quantity discounts are available.”
