Recently installed xampp on my virtual server for testing our wordpress page. However, I came across this problem when selecting the popular and recommended plugin, it says “an unexpected error occured. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration etc.”. Also i cannot update to version 4.9. Is it a connection problem or my xampp configuration?

  • It is quite a common difficulty with XAMPP etc “localhost” environments that the file and directory permissions do not permit the website to update its own files. This means that the convenient ways to Install Plugins, Install Themes, Upload Media, Update WordPress and Update Plugins, ALL don’t work. Very often rather than fix the permissions issues it is easier to copy the files using the traditional tools like FTP or file managers.
So if I were in your place I would download the plugin .ZIP files to my local computer, extract them there, then use “filezilla” to FTP upload them to the test web hosting computer, it is easier to do all this than it is to describe here.

Thank you for your reply, already fixed the problem. Yes,for us programmers, we use the traditional way of installing plugins, updates etc. via ftp however, our concern is that we have admins(marketing) that do not know ftp and we are replicating a scenario which they could download updates, themes, plugins etc. via wordpress only.
