# POP3 connect

 * I’m upgrading WordPress for someone. They were running 2.1, and I’m upgrading
   them to 2.1.3.
 * I’ve backed everything up, and I uploaded the 2.1.3 files to the server, overwriting
the old. I went to the admin page, and – as it should – said the database was
out of date, and I needed to upgrade. I clicked the link and went to “upgrade.
php” – but the page was entirely blank *except* for “-1”. That’s all it said
in the top left corner: “-1”.
 * So I decided to delete everything on the server and start fresh. This time the
database upgraded, but at the very last screen, I got this error:
 * “POP3 connect: Error [0] [Unknown error: 0]”
 * Sounds like an email issue – however, I can’t log into the admin area. The blog
itself is fine, but when I go to log into the admin area, that’s what I see.
 * I can’t find *anything* on either of these errors – does anyone have any ideas
   on what they mean?

 * ..and now it’s too late for me to edit my previous post. ::sigh::
 * I downloaded a fresh copy of 2.1.3 and unzipped it. Deleted everything from the
server (except the wp-config.php file), and uploaded the fresh copy.
 * Now neither the blog nor the admin area shows up. Instead, I have a lovely new
   error message:
 * _Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: wp\_rewrite in /usr/www/
   users/sitename/blog/wp-settings.php on line 234_
 * I did a search for this error, and there’s only one other person who’s had this
issue. They were told to download a fresh copy of the files and start over…
 * EDIT: just tried doing a fresh installation in a new directory with a new prefix.
Clicked the “install” link, and was taken to “install.php” –
 * where – oh joy! – the page in blank except for “-1” in the upper left-hand corner.

 * Okay, I’ve reinstalled the old site, and that’s back up and running as usual.
Now I’m just trying to do this with a new installation, so I don’t bother the
current site (I figure I’ll move everything after I get this sorted).
 * I managed to get 2.1 back on there, no problem. I made another installation,
did 2.1.3, and triple checked that all files (save the images) were uploaded
as ASCII. Permissions are all correct. I even used source files that I *know*
work – they are my own files.
 * However, when I go to install, I still get the “-1” on the install page. Nothing
whatsoever is showing up in the error logs. No errors are showing up on that
page either – just the “-1”.
 * Would anyone have any ideas on what this means? I’d appreciate it.
 * EDIT: and oh yes – even weirder. When I visit the *blog* page – it shows the “
license.txt” file. Never seen that one before.
 * 2nd EDIT: double-checked, and error reporting *is* on – but I did see something
I thought was odd in the phpinfo file. Something called “max-input-time” is set
to “-1” – I’m wondering if this could be the issue? Is that a correct setting?

 * Well, I got it to work. I still don’t understand the mysterious issue with upgrading
from 2.1 to 2.1.3, and what in the world that weird thing could have meant…
 * I upgraded to 2.1.2 first. Then upgraded to 2.1.3. *Then* I imported the backup.
   All is well now.
