Support » Plugin: UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin » Poor experience

  • The software feels pretty unpolished. You might like it up until you have to do a restore.

Especially if you want to do a routine task like moving your site to a new host, while keeping it at the same domain — UpdraftPlus does not do you any favors here.

You are forced to use the Migration product in this case. As a technical user, I am a bit insulted that they want to charge $70 to do what amounts to a few rsync commands. You could charge $5 for this, but not $70.

    Hi Matt,

Thank you for looking at UpdraftPlus. What you have written contains a number of significant errors.

The most important one is that, if you are just moving to a new host, then you don’t need to have the Migration add-on (which is not for that task) at all. You can do that in the free plugin, and we’ve written free documentation to show you how: https://updraftplus.com/support/moving-hosts/ . Comes up top if you Google “UpdraftPlus moving hosts”.

The migration add-on is for cloning a site at a different URL, and involves plenty of complex code for doing that correctly. It’s 100KB and 2000 lines of PHP code, and the result of plenty of research, development and improvement/correction over the years, handling of single site/multisite scenarios, in-advanced detections of incompatibilities, and special-case fix-ups for various plugins which are unfriendly to migrations. Not just a few rsync commands. It costs $30, not $70, which includes professional support as well as the software (https://updraftplus.com/shop/migrator). Of course, other options are there on the market if you are technically skilled and won’t need support if there are any problems. That’s fine, of course. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to feel insulted if you’re a techie who doesn’t need the value-addition of software that can help non-techies to do the same things that techies can.

    Best wishes,
    David
