Support » Plugin: Custom Permalinks » Polylang – Share same slug between languages

  • Hello,

I am using Polylang to create a multilingual site.
I would like all translated pages/posts to share the same slug between languages.
    e.g.
    In English: http://www.example.com/page-1
    In French: http://www.example.com/fr/page-1

Currently this is not possible due to WP limitations.

I tried to use your plugin setting both pages custom_permalink to page-1.
    That means that
    EN page-1 has slug:page-1 and custom_permalink: page-1
    FR page-1 has slug:page-1-fr and custom_permalink: page-1

The problem is that after doing that, both page URLs
    http://www.example.com/page-1
    http://www.example.com/fr/page-1
redirect to the same English URL
    http://www.example.com/page-1

I also tried custom_permalink: /fr/page-1 for the French, but the result was the same, it redirected back to the English page-1 URL.

Is there something that can be done about that?

    Thank you very much,
    Elias

    Hi Tobias

I see that you were able to resolve the issue. How did you do it? Or did you just purchase subscription to PRO version?

    @Jaaarne

    Hi Jaaarne,

I’ve solved it by purchasing the pro version.
But it’s also possible through research and writing custom php.
Thats what I did before. But in my eyes its not worth the effort.
Just go for the pro version.

Thanks for clarification. I suspected as much.

I would go for PRO, but I simply cannot afford it. 🙂 It’s very expensive and not worth it for me. I can have 12 piano lessons for these money. 🙂 I wanted it for a small non-commercial personal blog, because this plugin was the closest to what I needed. But since the first language is non-Latin based, translating slugs was not an option. As are 99 euros a year. 🙂

Well. That’s quite disappointing, but I’ll live. Will go for multisite, then.

Thanks again for the clarification! You have a nice looking website and very smooth user experience.

@eltarny do you think you client will be welling to contribute for a specific task by a kind of donation and/or bounty for a specific issue ?

@sasiddiqui if you give me 5minutes with your dev website I’ll setup it the way I always setup mine and always have this issue 🙂

    here few hints
    – my permalinks: /%category%/%postname%/

    plugins /polylang /settings
    URL modifications:
    — The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks
    — Hide URL language information for default language
    — Remove /language/ in pretty permalinks

Custom post types and Taxonomies and Synchronisation:
    — they are all activated
