It’s a pleasure to meet you, I am trying to understand how to point my web site domain: http://www.aymart.org to wordpress.org, I understand I will have to completely rebuild my web site in wordpress but will be happy to have the freedom to adjust and change things at will….
I am not very web savvy, more of a beginner; I understand that I have a Domain Host: Ipowerweb (I hate them)
a friend of mine is hosting my site on his server space, I think that this no longer matters because I would now be on the wordpress servers!?
Thanks for you help! Aymar in Peru…
No one points any domains to wordpress.org (this site). Is this a wordpress.com site or a self-hosted WordPress install?
Hi, I had wanted to point my .org site to wordpress.org; but from what you’re saying maybe this is impossible and I will have to use wordpress.com?
I wonder if another option would be a self hosted wordpress install?
Thanks for your quick response!
If you want to use WordPress on your own hosting space, you have to install it first. The only other option is to create a wordpress.com account/site and then pay for domain mapping.
Hi Esmi, so yes, I want to install wordpress on my own hosting space, the idea is to then point the content I create there to the following domain name:
a site which I’ve had for some time now, is domain mapping possible in WordPress.org or do I have to go to WordPress.com?
Thanks for your time!
If you already own the domain and are wanting to do a self-hosted install, you simply contact your registrar (or sometimes you can do this yourself through your account on the registrar’s site), and have them point it at your hosting service’s name servers.
So, for example, if you registered you domain through GoDaddy, you would log in there, and change your domain’s name servers to match whatever name servers were provided by your hosting service.
Domain mapping is for people who are hosted on WordPress.com and want their purchased domain to send people to theirblog.wordpress.com.
If you want to use the software from WordPress.org, you have to host it on a server of your choosing. WordPress.org does not provide hosting services.
