    If you turn on EWWW’s debugging option, the very top line of the debug information below the settings should indicate what user php is running under.

    I should also clarify that it might be the permissions on the plugin folder itself: plugins/ewww-image-optimizer/

    When it says “extraction of files failed” that indicates the pngout archive was downloaded, but somehow the decompression failed, and the plugin could not find the pngout-static binary file where it was supposed to be after extraction (but BEFORE it is actually copied to the ewww/ folder).

    Check to see if there is a pngout sub-folder within the ewww-image-optimizer folder
