Since somedays, when clicking on a png file in “screenshots” section of a plugin in official wp.com plugins depot – all plugins in fact – the pgn is not shown in the browser (Firefox and Chrome tested) but downloaded ! Very boring.

You’re just not trying hard enough. It’s been happening for AGES but it’s not WordPress.ORG’s fault and it’s not all plugins. 😉

See this post for an explanation. When that happens it’s because the plugin authors are uploading the images with the wrong MIME type.

    Plugin Screenshots Downloading?

The instructions in that link will fix it but the plugin author is the one who has to do the fix.

Thank you for quick answer. I test for years WP plugins and I can say that there is more and more problem with png as I did not noticed the problem before. I will keep the link and ask the plugin author to modify his images.

To clarify, we do use automatic mime type selection, so a normal client would not produce this problem.

However, some SVN clients of assorted stripes always set the mime type themselves on the initial file add. This is not unusual or unexpected, but it can be problematic if the client doesn’t have the right mime types available to it, which happens on a fair number of default configurations.

It is something that a plugin author can fix themselves, and if they have problems, they can always email us at plugins at wordpress.org to assist them with solving the issue.

Same problem with a gif file !! here http://wordpress.org/plugins/baw-force-plugin-updates/screenshots/

I will ask the creator of the plugin but it’s his 23rd plugin…

Same problem, same solution. He just needs to change the mime type of the file to image/gif.

    His answer

So, this is a gif, i uploaded with turtoise, and this is it :/

Yes, and he can use Tortoise to fix the mime type too.

    Plugin Screenshots Downloading?

    OK, thanks.

Today, I took a look at new plugins – as I do nearly everyday. I looked at 9 new plugins that interested me. 3 of them got screenshots to show. ALL of these screenshots where automatically downloaded.
    100% failure!

Second test: I openen all the new plugin of first page and took a look at the screenshots when they got one. ALL screenshots are automatically downloaded !

This simple statistic shows that there is a problem with the way WP manages screenshots. You can blame the user but 100% failure means what the problem is NOT ONLY about the users.

I did not test the other pages but I suspect that more than 90% of recent plugins with screeenshots have this problem. And it’s a recent problem ! So something changed somewhere…
