  • I’ve only just become aware of a problem with my WordPress plugins at my domain – because they’re not working, I get

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: the_nice_category() in /home/virtual/site108/fst/var/www/html/index.php on line 35
on the main page. When I check the plugins when I’m logged in, I get

Couldn’t open plugins directory or there are no plugins available.

on the plugins page and nothing underneath. The plugins are in the wp-content/plugins folder (the default ones for version 1.2.2 and for the theme I’m using) and I’m quite confused as to why they’re not working even though they’re in the correct folder.

I don’t know if upgrading to 1.5 then back to 1.2.2 had anything to do with this but I thought I’d mention that I had done that a couple of days ago.

  • When upgrading an existing site of WP 1.2.x to WP 1.5, it is imperative that you deactivate all the plugins and then re-activate them after the upgrade. This might be also true if you ended up downgrading again.

Remove all the files from the /wp-contents/plugins/ directory and see if you can get to the Plugins page and have it recognize that there are no plugins and then add a single plugin to ensure things are working and from there you can add the remaining ones.

Why did you downgrade from 1.5 back to 1.2.2?

I did find instructions on how to upgrade and followed them to the letter, deactivating plugins and such, deleting the files I was supposed to before uploading new ones. But for some unknown reason, 1.5 didn’t work properly so I went back to 1.2.2.

I’ve just tried what you suggested but that hasn’t worked – I’m still getting that message. I’ve noticed that I’m getting

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/virtual/site108/fst/var/www/html/blog/wp-admin/options-head.php on line 8

(I believe line 8 on that page is FROM $tableoptiongroups ORDER BY group_id”);)

on my wp-admin/options-general.php page but everything works fine – I can still change things there with no problems.

They’re working again now – I played around with CHMOD (don’t know if I had the wrong permissions or what) and stuff and lo and behold, they decide to work again.
