A couple of days ago, started to get a FLOOD of Spam Notices. Went to the site and discovered askimet was not working, and all of my plugins lost.

Plugin and Insalled Plugins page has the notice–
“You do not appear to have any plugins available at this time.”
Ann attempt to Add New (re-install) produced error: “Folder Already Present”

Looked via FTP and my plug-in folders are present, are named and located correctly.
    Site is otherwise functioning properly.

    WTF????

[ WordPress 3.8.24 running Twenty Eleven theme. ]

    Hi,

Are you able to install any plugins at all, or does it always give this error?

Could you also give us an example of the full path to your akismet installation from FTP (this should be something like wp-content/plugins/akismet/akismet.php

    /httpdocs/studio_blog/wp-content/plugins/akismet/askimet.php

I might point out that NONE of my plugings is appearing in Dashboard > plugings or currently running.
Nothing exotic or funky, some of the usual stuff.

Just to test, I tried to install something innocuous – “Duplicate Post”
The install was supposedly successful –

    Plugins page still says –
You do not appear to have any plugins available at this time.

    2nd Attempt produces…
    Destination folder already exists. /httpdocs/studio_blog/wp-content/plugins/duplicate-post/
    Plugin install failed.

The “duplicate-post” folder DOES appear within the Plugins folder when checked in FTP.

All right, that helps a lot, could you, in that akismet.php file, pastebin the content of the file (put it on a service like pastebin.com or gist.github.com, as it’s often a lot of code and it’s cluttery to read on the forums) ?

I can do that, but I might point out that WP does not seem to be able to see ANY plugins.

    akismet.php is parked here:

    Seems to be in order.

My ISP was able to get things sorted.

    Hi,

Very glad to hear that! If curious I wanted to see the plugin file because usually (but not always) when plugins disappear like this, the plugin files have been modified so WordPress can’t recognize them.

I am presuming that since the file looked fine in this case, permissions on your plugins directory were changed which prevented the files from being accessed.

Was straight up the first thing I checked. All the relevant folders – 755.

My ISP modified something in wp-config.php that brought them back.
